An introduction to BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu)

Made famous by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is one of the fastest-growing and most effective forms of martial arts in the world today. The basic premise of BJJ is that 90% of actual fights end up on the ground. As such, BJJ focuses primarily on grappling and submission techniques in ground fighting.

At The Academy, a typical BJJ class will start with warm-up exercises, then grappling techniques and drills, followed by light sparring. You will learn self-defence skills on the ground as well as develop fitness, flexibility and agility. Be warned – it’s addictive!

Our classes are suited to all levels of skill and experience.

For the beginner or novice

If you have little or no experience in BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu), our Ready 2 Roll fundamentals Classes are perfect for you. They focus on the fundamentals, including basic techniques, body movement drills, balance drills, and body position.


An introduction to Muay Thai Kickboxing

Thailand’s national sport, Muay Thai, is recognised globally as the most effective striking art today. Honed over a period of 2000 years, it is a graceful blend of punches, kicks, elbows and knees, along with various clinching techniques.

At The Academy, our professional coaches will help you to achieve your goals, whether you are simply looking to learn self-defence and improve your cardio fitness, or to develop striking techniques to complement the stand-up aspect of your kickboxing MMA training regime.

Our classes are suited to all levels of skill and experience.

For the beginner or novice

If you have little or no experience in Thai Boxing, our Beginner Classes are the place to start! You will learn basic striking techniques whilst developing balance, coordination, rhythm, speed and power. These classes provide a great cardiovascular workout, promoting fitness, muscle toning and weight loss.

For the more advanced student

If you have experience in Thai Boxing, our Intermediate Classes will further your previous training by focusing on more advanced striking techniques, incorporating drills to improve stamina, endurance, strength and speed, teaching you the art of efficient movement to generate maximum power.

If you have been training consistently for at least three months, you can also test your skills in our Muay Thai Sparring Classes. Sparring with like-minded training partners is not only a great way to get an extra kick out of training, it is also a fantastic opportunity to learn from others, and a valuable asset for students considering pushing themselves to a competitive level.


Boxing is an excellent way to train your body when you are stuck in a fitness rut and nothing seems to work. The sport is one of the most physically demanding you will ever come across. Whether you want to pursue boxing as a hobby, become an amateur competitor or go professional, boxing is one of the best ways to train your whole body for total fitness.

At boxing classes Byron Bay, you will learn all about boxing the right way so you can derive the maximum benefit from each training session.



History has shown that martial arts is an excellent way to teach children life skills such as discipline, hard work, honesty, integrity and teamwork. It challenges and develops them both physically and mentally, and encourages continuous self-improvement.

Kids’ Classes

The Academy offers two Kid’s Programs – the X-Kids’ Program, which is based on the discipline of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and the Mini Tigers Program, which is based on Thai Boxing.

Children aged 4-14 enjoy the fun-filled sessions in which they play games and practice technique drills, learning self-defence skills whilst developing their balance, coordination and flexibility. The training also instills in them values like confidence, respect for others, and a motivation to succeed.

Advanced X-kids BJJ Classes

If your child would like to take his/her training one step further, X Kids Advanced BJJ Classes are also available. These classes provide specific competition-based training, focusing on strategy and sparring with partners. Invitation by Professor.
